Aug 18, 2019 Mousing over quests shows the overview in a tooltip. Option to display the quest overview if there’s no objectives. Clicking on quests brings up the real quest log with that quest selected. Displays the quest level in the quest title. Elite quests display a ‘ ‘ in the level of the quest. MonkeyQuest was around during vanilla way back when. Track more than 5 quests at a time in a nifty UI frame. Questie is a modernized version closer to the retail quest tracker, with minimap designations, a directional arrow, etc. Jul 23, 2019 The in-game quest helper obviously didnt exist back in Classic, so players resorted to various addons to help them track quests and Questie is here to fill in the blanks! Whats Questie? Questie is a quest helper for Classic WoW, which adds icons to the map for quests which are currently present i.
Now that we know for certain that World of Warcraft Classic will become a reality at some point in the future, more and more fellow WoW fans are drawn to good old vanilla. And logically, questions such as “What’s a good Vanilla WoW Quest Helper?” and “How good is Questie?” are getting more popular by the minute.

I know that some of you probably don’t remember an awful lot of the original game (especially if you weren’t hardcore enough), or you might’ve skipped vanilla altogether if you started playing during a later expansion.

No matter the reason, today we’re taking a closer look at how the quest system worked back in the days and what your best options are when it comes to AddOns. Yes, original WoW didn’t have an integrated quest tracker.
But wait, why wasn’t there any built-in quest tracker/helper for vanilla?
Well, because vanilla was the pinnacle of World of Warcraft in terms of how hard the game actually was. Back in 2005, there were an awful lot of aspects lacking that players take for granted today.
And when it comes to quests, it was the same story – hardcore to the bone. Obviously, Blizzard wanted us to actually read the text quests in their entirety, because for the most time that’s how you get an idea of what the objective is and where to go.
More than ten years ago, players had three options in order to keep their sanity, because some quests would totally make you go insane – that’s how vague some text objectives and descriptions were. So, the three options were:
- Get an AddOn
- Alt & tab and visit Thottbot or Wowhead
- Ask for help in the general chat
Guess what though – in order to have this database of quests and relevant information, someone had to type it in, right? Indeed, those people are true heroes in my eyes. Can you imagine doing the mighty “Mankrik’s Wife” quest in the Barrens without any guidance or general idea what direction to head to?
Needless to say, questing was immensely harder than it is right now and subsequently more rewarding. But hey, why don’t we check the best quest AddOns for vanilla WoW since we’re on the subject?

Top 2 vanilla WoW quest AddOns
First and foremost, I know that in 99% of cases the argument over the best quest AddOn in vanilla is between Questie and Shagu (now pfQuest). And that’s why they are the top two AddOns – what a shocker, eh?
1. Questie
The one that I’m using currently and unarguably the best of the best, or in other words – THE quest AddOn for World of Warcraft 1.12.1. Most of the people who play vanilla are most likely relying on this bad boy and for a good reason.
It supports all kinds of mapping AddOns (not just Cartographer) and the devs behind it have reworked the whole thing so that it’s much more like Blizz’s default quest tracker available in current WoW. And on top of that, it’s pretty user-friendly so that’s a total win-win.

For me personally, Questie is so awesome because it offers great functionality without being too intrusive. You simply install it and forget about it – the only thing that you have to worry about is configuring it if you don’t like certain things being displayed (like QuestArrow etc.).
Here are some of the cool key features:
- Shows you the precise location of relevant quest objective in your World Map (like mobs, items and so on)
- Displays available quests on your main map
- (there’s a filter option for the max and min quest level that’ll show)
- You can toggle profession-related quests
- QuestArrow – displays an arrow that points you towards the objective
- CorpseArrow – same concept but directs you to your corpse (obviously)
While Questie is by far the most popular quest AddOn for 1.12.1, I’ve found that there are some glitches every now and then. Like, for some reason, sometimes certainly available quests don’t appear on the map, while ones that I’ve already completed do – go figure.
2. Shagu/pfQuest
Some swear by Shaqu or pfQuest as it’s not known. Apparently, it’s more of an in-game version of the likes of Wowhead. Honestly, it kind of fits the theme of original WoW – you know, not being spoon-fed all the time.
The general concept sure is pretty similar to Questie (they’re quest tracker/helper AddOns after all), but there are certain parts that set Shagu apart. Namely the exact location of NPCs on the map, with coordinates and everything. Have a look yourself:
- You get to choose which quests show on your main map
- It shows the exact location of a mob with the relevant coords (Questie offers a more general guidance – it’s not as precise).
- There’s a “Show” button under every quest in your quest log and that makes the objective for this particular quest to show on the minimap.
- This AddOn also helps you track herbs, nodes, recipes, items etc. It’s more of a database, not just a mere quest helper.
As you can clearly see folks, it’s a tough call between Questie and Shagu (pfQuest). The latter sure offers more overall functionality and is definitely the better AddOn if you want more bells and whistles. In the end, it all boils down to what your priorities are.
Wrapping it up
Playing vanilla WoW is all about the adventure so you’d be forgiven if you stayed true to the hardcore nature of the original game and said “no” to quest helpers. But for all of you that want some additional help for your adventures in Azeroth, you’re now familiar with the two best quest tracker AddOns.
As I already pointed out, I’m personally using Questie at the moment (because I got used to it and I couldn’t be bothered to change it), although pfQuest is probably just as good, if not better.
Now, why don’t you share your thoughts on vanilla WoW quest AddOns and whether or not you use any of them and if so, which one? You can do so in the comment section below!
All the information on this page is for the old Vanilla version of this addon (Questie 3.7.1/WoW 1.12)
For the Classic version of this addon (Questie 4.x/WoW 1.13) you'll find installation instructions here
In order to properly set up Questie with your World of Warcraft client, you must ensure you have the following:
- A Vanilla (1.12.1) WoW Client.
- For Classic (1.13) WoW Client go here.
- A Questie release.
- You can download the latest stable release from here.
When you have both ready:
- Extract the downloaded zip archive.
- Copy the
!Questie
directory into your<WOW PATH>/Interface/Addons/
directory.- It should be beside several folders that start with
Blizzard_
- NOTE: The default program folders in Windows (usually C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86)) are write protected. DO NOT INSTALL WOW THERE. If it is installed there, move it to some other folder. When WoW is a subfolder of one of these locations, Questie (and all other addons) can not save their variables to a file when the client closes. This leads to weird bugs, like quests being marked as finished only so long as you do not close the client, then marked as unfinished again when you restart it.
- It should be beside several folders that start with
- Start WoW, log into the character selection screen, and verify Questie is enabled by going into the addon menu (Button on the bottom left of the selection screen). If there is no button or Questie is not in the list when the menu is opened, there might have been a mistake when copying Questie to the WoW directory.
- NOTE: It is strongly recommended to remove or increase the addon memory limit (top right of the addon menu window). The default value for vanilla WoW (1.12.1) is very low and can cause the game to log you out when all addons together use more memory than assigned here, which is very likely to happen when Questie is enabled. Setting the value to 0 removes the limit and is the recommended setting for most people. However if the total available RAM is very limited, set to at least 256MB to prevent hard crashes of the WoW client.
- When you have made sure the addon is installed and the memory limit is removed, you can log into a character and start using Questie.
- Q: How do I move the QuestieTracker and QuestArrow?
- A: Hold down CTRL + Shift + Hold Left Mouse Button + Drag
- Q: 'My Dead Corpse'? Do you even English, bro?
- A: The 'My Dead Corpse' is kind of an inside joke from the original Closed Beta for Vanilla WoW days. Back then I was playing Alliance exclusively and the famous Horde guild [Goon Squad] was notorious for trolling Stranglethorn Vale. They would lock up the zone for hours corpse camping any Alliance player. Someone created a toon called MyDeadCorpse and left it dead and never resurrected. It was always there in the zone. A naked Gnome. For some reason, the Horde HATED Gnomes. :) Ref.
- Q: I get an error:
attempt to index global 'QuestieConfig' (a nil value)
- A: This can be caused by upgrading from an older version of Questie or using it for the firsttime before a SavedVariables can be properly created. Please use
/questie clearconfig
while ingame to clear/reset your config file.
- Q: I get an error:
- Q: I play on a non-English server and Questie isn't working. How come?
- A: Currently, Questie only supports English servers/clients. Language support is currently being worked on but is not yet available.
- Q: I can't seem to get my quests to appear in the tracker automatically.
- A: For those not running EQL3 or some other QuestLog mod. If you prefer the default wow QuestLog andTracker that's fine but it's very limited. For example, if a quest doesn't have any objectives to'track' then it won't appear in the quest tracker and no Quest Arrow will be available for it.Additionally, quests will not automatically be tracked by the default WoW quest tracker. The way thatit works is that if you have the option enabled in the games Interface Options --> 'Automatic QuestTracking' then yes, it will auto track a quest with an objective once you OBTAIN the first quest item. Then it will appear automatically in the list unless you manually Shift+Click the quest in theQuestLog but again, only if there is a 'trackable' objective. Unlike EQL3 or otherQuestLog/QuestTracker mods where pretty much anything is trackable, these quests will appear in theQuestie QuestTracker. If the quest appears then map coordinates are cached and this allows theQuestieArrow to hook into the position and give you an arrow.
- Q: Why isn't the QuestieArrow appearing?
- A: You have to click on an objective on the Minimap, Worldmap or the quest in the QuestieTracker. Ifa quest has never been tracked it won't appear until after it has appeared at least once in theQuestieTracker. If you disable the QuestieTracker, the QuestieArrow will not work.
